How to Use Public Domain Information To Your Best Advantage

According to Wikkipedia public domain information is the body of knowledge (writing, art, music, inventions) to which no person or other legal entity can establish or maintain proprietary interests.

In other words – no one can claim ownership!

How does that benefit you?

Product creation is one step in the information marketing process. Public domain information can provide a seemingly endless supply of ready-made products from which you can benefit financially. There are several requirements that must be met before a creative work can be republished in your own name. If you neglect to jump through these hoops you can find yourself on the short end of a large lawsuit.

The first issue is to determine if the product is indeed in the public domain. If the book was written before 1923 then it automatically falls into public domain. If the copyright was not renewed then after a certain number of years the book would fall into public domain.

You can make a preliminary search at http://www.copyright.gov/records/ where you’ll find that most works between 1950 – present have been entered into the database. There is a short tutorial on the site to teach you how to use it.

Once you have determined to your satisfaction that the book is in public domain you might want to start the process of making a digital copy. Before publishing and marketing a copy of your new work you should have a certified report generated from the Library of Congress that certifies your work is in the public domain at the time of your request. This report will be necessary to protect your interests should the copyright come into question.

The financial benefits to using public domain information can be quite substantial. Doing a search on Matt Furey or Ted Ciuba and you’ll find those two particular marketers took books from the public domain and built an empire around them.

Matt Furey found a book of wrestling moves that had fallen into public domain. He added his information, republished and the rest is history. Ted Ciuba used the famous book ‘Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. This book is freely available in digital format. Ted Ciuba reworked a piece of it, republished it and copyrighted it under his name. He has built an entire business around the principles from that book.

Books are not the only possibility. There are art pieces that can be republished and sold; movies that can be made to MP4 files and played on PSP players; music that can be remastered for MP3 files. Another option could be audio books of some of the old children’s classics. Look through the potential files and use your imagination.

How do you find these works? There are several places you can start. At Project Gutenburg they have amassed a digital library of over 1700 ebooks that fall into public domain. You can also browse to find other sources of all creative works that are in public domain.

Using public domain information can be cost effective if you find a book that has already been made to digital format. You might take on the challenge of typing the book into a computer yourself if it isn’t digital or use a typist from Elance. The largest expense is the certified report from the Library of Congress. Starting in July 2006 they significantly increased their prices from less than $75.00 for a certified report to $300.00. Apparently use of public domain information is skyrocketing and the Library of Congress is taking advantage of the laws of supply and demand.

Even with the expense of a certified report using work from the public domain can be cost effective and add credibility to your effort. This is a resource that holds real potential for marketers today.

How to Be Happy - Even When Things Go Wrong

A couple of weeks ago, I got hit by about three events which felt like a kick in the guts - all at once.

And I was reeling... annoyed... frustrated... and felt downright angry at times.

I was in a spin. I was riddled with anxiety - it was like it was attacking me & I couldn't get away.

I couldn't sleep. In fact, I went to bed at 10:30pm one night and was still lying there at 12:30pm.

Then I got this gut feeling to go to the book case to read a book.

So that's what I did - despite the fact I heard the words told to me by someone or other over the years that you can't learn everything from books (that may be true, but you can learn a HECK of a lot from books).

Anyway, I picked up this book called "Slowing down to the pace of life"...

And in that book they were talking about how we tend to follow thoughts...

So one bad thing happens. For instance, someone cuts you off at the traffic and you start thinking...

HOW DARE YOU

and then you think that guys a prick... he shouldn't have done it... I hope he has an accident, etc. etc.

Your mind runs away like a horse bolting out of a gate.

Then you are having a nice relaxing weekend and everyone is enjoying themselves and someone has a dig at you...

And your mind runs off again...

Then you're at work and you get a nasty email from someone you weren't expecting and off your mind bolts again.

Anyway, here's what I did to get to sleep right away.

I stopped following my thoughts. Because those thoughts create feelings - and not good ones.

Stop following them - end the pain - get back to the present.

Makes sense, right?

My wife was telling me about someone she used to work with who followed this advice and how everything could be going pear shaped around him and he would sit there with a smile on his face... seemingly unfazed.

This in my view is what he was doing.

Truth is, your mind will go into fear... anger... frustration... and create all sorts of dramas for you in your life.

Following it is like chasing after a can of poison. It's going to intoxicate you... stress you out and make you sick.

Instead, just let the poison run away to the tip and stay in the present moment.

That's the key to staying positive and focused.

Instead, look at what you can do.

So if you are frustrated at not having enough customers right now... dealing with clients who don't appreciate you... and just downright angry things aren't going your way...

Don't follow those thoughts.

Let them go, stay in the present and write down a plan for what you can do instead.

Top Tips to Extend Laptop Battery Life

A short battery life can largely dampen your ability to use your laptop. It is quite distracting to constantly have to be in search of an outlet so that you can recharge your quickly diminishing battery power. There are, however, ways in which you can extend the life of your laptop battery, regardless of the type of laptop which you possess. Whether you own a Toshiba laptop, an HP laptop, or one of the many types of Dell laptops, these following tips can help you to maintain battery power for longer periods of time:

Tip #1 Dim Screen

In order to do your work, you probably don't need your screen to be on the brightest setting. Instead, dim your screen and save some battery life this way.

Tip #2 Remove External Devices

Devices such as your mouse or USB drive can drain the battery power. When you do not need to use these items, shut them down and disconnect them from your computer. Additionally, buy a wall charger and charge your iPod there instead of in your computer as this can quickly drain your power.

Tip #3 Purchase Additional RAM

Extra RAM will allow you to utilize more memory actually present on the computer instead of having to use virtual memory, which requires the use of the hard drive. Virtual memory is renowned for draining battery life. RAM will require additional energy but, if you typically use large amounts of virtual memory, the extra RAM could actually help conserve power.

Tip #4 Defrag

The quicker the hard drive is able to work, the less energy is required. In order to increase hard drive efficiency, defrag often.

Tip #5 Clean Battery Contacts

Clean the metal contacts of the battery every other month using rubbing alcohol. This makes the use of battery power more efficient.

Tip #6 Hibernate

Instead of using standby, hibernate your computer when not in use as this will save power. Not only will this save power, it will also enable you to begin where you left off when you next use your laptop.

Tip #7 Shut Down Background Programs

Instead of having multiple programs open at once, which can reduce battery power quickly, only leave the ones that are essential open.

Tip #8 Don't Work on Multiple Projects At Once

Using multiple programs at once can dramatically reduce battery life.

Tip #9 Make Sure Computer is Cool

A cooler computer will use less battery power. Make sure that the air vents on the laptop are clean. You can clean the area using a keyboard cleaner or a soft cloth.

Tip #10 Use Optimal Power Options

Use the max battery option on the computer. This can be adjusted by going to the power options section on your laptop's control panel.
